THE POWER OF DESIGN(2017)

Goal:

Create a magazine that represents the limeño culture and would help people who have moved to Lima to get to truly know our city that has so much to offer. This, without having to go to the stereotypical places like La Rosa Náutica or El Puente de los Suspiros, but to authentic places.

This was an extremely complex four-month long project in which every person in the class had a very significant role. Every person, besides having to write an article and take pictures for it, besides the CEO, was either part of the finance, layout and photography, marketing or editing team.

The individual teams' tasks like editing articles, getting sponsors, making advertisement, editing pictures, creating layout and organizing the teams had to come together to create our magazine.

We chose for our magazine to be about limeño culture because we wanted to show the people who come to live to Lima that it is not just about food, even if a part of it is.

I was part of the layout and photography team.

I had to learn about the principles of graphic design, color theory, food photography, portrait taking, and photography exposure and composition. As well as how to design a creative magazine, how to use adobe InDesign CC, Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Lightroom.

We started by just researching, watching tutorials and making templates, but this became the most stressful project I have ever encountered and believe I will ever encounter. For about a month I had time to do absolutely nothing outside of school besides edit article layouts over and over, most days not getting more than six hours of sleep. However, even if at the time I doubted whether this entire project was worth doing at all; now that I have the final result, it most certainly was worth it.

Even if everyone in the team helped each other with some article layouts, to the right are the the ones that I designed, besides my own that is below.

I wrote and took pictures of a restaurant called 1087 Bistro.

I'll be honest: English is one of my least favorite languages and therefore I struggle when writing in it. When writing this article I not only had problems with writing with run-on sentences, but also had trouble making it engaging. However, with the editor's lessons on the five senses and figurative language, as well as the feedback I got in the many prototypes we had, I ended up with, what I feel confident saying, a great article that represented the essence of this place.

Taking the pictures was the fun part for me. I love photography, especially food photography. Besides loving this restaurant because of its concept, I chose a restaurant because I knew I'd enjoy the complexity of food photography. Nevertheless, there was still much to learn and lots of things to get better at.
